Rock-n-roll has almost always been guitar-driven. Along the way we have gotten to know endless killer guitar players. I thought we would talk about the unknowns who don’t get the critical acclaim they deserve or will eventually swim in. Since there are too many to choose from I have chosen to stick to what I know. Enjoy.
Estas Tonne – Russian ex-patriate street musician and guitar virtuoso whose ‘Song of the Golden Dragon’. This guy’s bio is a mystery beyond the basics. His guitar, fingers, and soul are inextricably linked. ‘Saying Hello’ is one more street performance that draws you in and holds you in your chair… riveted.
Keshav Dhar – progressive metal -Indian Djent guitarist extrordinairre, founder of SkyHarbor, creator of ambient guitars licks layered to support rhythm structures. That cultural meld of Indian and Metal flavors a polished jam-band metal. ‘Maeva’ is a perfect example of that Dream Pop Metal with Daniel Tompkins on vocals.
Doyle Dykes – country acoustic guitar picker, longest running endorser of Taylor Guitars, and Grand Ol Opry player. Straight from the heart guts acoustic pickin’ puts most guitar players to shame. Try ‘Amazing Fingerstyle Vol. One’ and his versions of ‘Classical Gas’ by Mason Williams and ’25 or 6 to 4′ by Chicago
Roy Buchanan- The greatest of all the unknown guitarists, for sure. Without Roy, David Gilmore of Pink Floyd and His Majesty, Jeff Beck would still be garden variety guitar players. Tragically, Roy Buchanan hung himself with his shirt while incarcerated in a jail cell in Virginia on a DUI charge. ‘Live from Austin Texas’ gives you the entire stage performance that summer night so long ago…..
