What I like about The Secret Sisters is how they do that combination of Andrews Sisters’  ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ and ‘Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree’, from the 1940s, and the Everly Brothers ‘Dream’ & ‘Cathy’s Clown’ from the 1960’s. My yen for this duo is compounded by the fact that they are truly sisters, who grew up singing a capella in the church choir, and are really just two girls next door.

I first heard of them on NPR. Originally from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the sisters, Laura and Lydia Rogers, have that homespun quality and a natural ability for finding that harmony sweet spot.  ‘Tomorrow Will Be Kinder’ is featured on the Hunger Games Soundtrack, and they’ve also recorded with Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame). I watched them on a British variety show performing  ‘The One I Love Is Gone’.  Although they do a number of ‘cover’ tunes from other artists, ‘Tennesee Me’ is written by the girls and is that retro-sixties Country sound they do so well. ‘Put Your Needle Down’ is the name of their latest release and features ‘Lonely Island’, which truly shows the magic of this duo.

T-Bone Walker (who has produced Counting Crows, Elvis Costello, Wallflowers, & John Mellencamp) worked with them on this project, which looks very nice on a resumé. The ladies have also made some music with the Celtic band, The Chieftains, recording the song ‘Peggy Gordon’.

These young ladies are as natural as can be, personally and professionally. In the music business today, they are a breath of fresh air for traditional music and those who love the twists and turns of beautiful harmony.
